“Modi and Shah have provided strong and resolute leadership that has allowed these useless intellectuals to indulge their Modi hatred. Deep down, even they know the truth,” – Sridhar Vembu
Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has hit out at intellectuals who hate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, arguing that critics often overlook the scale of transformation India has undergone over the past decade.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Vembu strongly condemned remarks by historian Ramchandran Guha, who during a political debate with veteran journalist Karan Thapar commented that “nobody hates Modi and Amit Shah’s BJP more than me” (https://t.co/KVMMylF05J).
The sharp exchange between Thapar and Guha was happening around Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s eligibility for becoming a prime minister.
Sharing the clip, Vembu lambasted and claimed that “Modi-hatred is almost a requirement to be called an intellectual in some circles” and urged supporters of the Prime Minister to counter such narratives by revisiting India’s recent history.
The technology entrepreneur said several regions of the country were grappling with serious challenges before the BJP-led government came to power at the Centre in 2014.
Vembu wrote that Congress left Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Assam were facing major security concerns, while the Naxal insurgency had made large parts of central India difficult to govern. He also described Bihar and Uttar Pradesh as largely lawless during that period.
“Congress had left Punjab, Kashmir, Assam all burning. The Naxal menace had made middle India ungovernable. Bihar and UP had become lawless. Bengal stagnated and deteriorated. Today, Bengal has been rescued from the lawless TMC. For the first time since my childhood, we can discuss development and progress in all these states. We can disagree on specific paths to development, but at least we get to have that conversation.”
Hailing achievements by Modi-led govt Vembu said, none of it was achieved magically.
“These achievements did not happen magically. They required a lot of hard work and sacrifice – and all of it happened democratically. Let us not forget that Congress used Article 356 very often to dismiss state governments and now they lecture us on “democratically. Let us not forget that Congress used Article 356 very often to dismiss state governments and now they lecture us on “democratic values”.
The technology entrepreneur further said,
“Today, Bengal has been rescued from the lawless TMC. For the first time since my childhood, we can discuss development and progress in all these states. We can disagree on specific paths to development, but at least we get to have that conversation.”
“Modi-hatred is almost a requirement to be called an ‘intellectual’ in some circles. We have to counter them, so let’s recall some history. Congress had left Punjab, Kashmir, Assam all burning. The Naxal menace had made middle India ungovernable. Bihar and UP had become lawless.

Vembu further argued that many of these issues have seen significant improvement over the years. He credited the Modi government with strengthening governance, improving infrastructure and restoring a sense of order in several parts of the country.
The Zoho founder’s remarks come amid ongoing political debates over the Modi government’s performance, particularly as opposition parties continue to question its record on the economy, social cohesion and democratic institutions. – MoneyControl News, 5 June 2026
