“There is no literary evidence of an Aryan invasion or migration. So called textual references to Aryan invasion or migration require changing meaning of words and taking them out of context.” – Dr David Frawley

Throwing his weight behind the ‘Aryan Project’ by Delhi University’s Sanskrit department, noted American scholar David Frawley said there is a need for an extensive new Vedic study, and insisted that Aryans were indigenous to India.

“There is a need for extensive new Vedic study and research in India, including considering the mantric and yogic dimensions of Vedic knowledge,” Frawley said on Monday while giving a presentation of his findings on ‘Aryan Theory in The Light of Textual Evidences’.

Vedic literary evidence — the largest, best preserved and most complete from the early ancient world — reflects a compilation over a long period of time by several kingdoms and dynasties, he said.

“Such a vast literature cannot exist without a civilization to produce and sustain it over the centuries.”

“No literary evidence of Aryan invasion or migration. So called textual references to Aryan invasion/migration require changing meaning of words and taking them out of context.”

“For example, Arya was a term of respect and not about ethnicity. Dark skinned Dasyus are only forces of Avidya or darkness, not a racial metaphor,” Frawley added.

The western born teacher in the Vedic tradition is popular for his books in which he has rejected the ‘Aryan Invasion Theory’

The Sanskrit department, which has started the project to prove that Aryans were indigenous to the country, will hold at least seven lectures.

AIT (Aryan Invasion Theory)It also plans to invite national and international scholars to speak on the issue.

The ‘Aryan Invasion Theory’ is a hotly contested one in the academic world. Noted historians like Romila Thapar and D. N. Jha support the theory, while right-wing historians claim that Aryans were indigenous to the country

“This debate has been there for long but we never had the Sanskrit department doing anything about it. Where were they all these years? Why all of a sudden they have come out. This shows they have a backing now. No historian takes Frawley seriously. His right-wing credentials are well-known,” Jha remarked. – Daily Mail, 25 November 2014

  1. The Germans had their own reasons to follow the idea produced by Max Mueller, however, Mueller was employed by the British East India Co, specifically, to develope this theory and make use of it to rule India, and successfully, they did. Let us examine some of the points and then decide whether I and you would like to call ourselves, Aryan and Dravidian.

1 Aryan and Dravidian are English words.
2 Hendrik Van Loon in The Story of Mankind (1921) – A new and more enegetic race appeared upon the horizon, made itself the ruling class in the country, which is now known as Br India…. white men like Semites, spoke a different language, common ancestor of all European languages. lived among the peaks which surround the plateau of Iran, and that is why we call them Aryans…..Aryans had been the rulers and masters of tens of millions od DOCILE LITTLE BROWN MEN.

3 A C Bouquet in Comparative Religion (1941) – …first wave of Nordics passed into India, others followed in succession. These were people very much the type of our Scandinavian fore-fathers, hard fighting, heay drinking folk, with a certain contempt for the short dark races…..they called them Dasyus..

4 W N Weech in History of the World (1942)…Aryan denotes the primary language…does not mean a common racial stock….they were of different blood!!!!!!!!!

5 Allan Hownslar & Terry L Smart in A Study of World History (1977) – The earliest Aryans had no interest in cities or trading. They destroyed the cities and left the ruins to decay. The Aryans had no respect for the Indian culture and treated the natives as slaves….

6 Mary Stanton & Albert Hyma in Streams of Civilization (1976) – Aryans were fond of horse-racing, chariot-racing, dancing, gambling and wrestling..

    7 No invasion, only a migration….Romila Thaper

I would not want to disqualify my Europeann brothers from being Aryans, I am quite happy being, just ARYA. Would you join me as well!

  2. If your wish is to ban the use of the word ‘aryan’ in academic discourse, then it will not happen. All scholars use the word in one context or another and will continue to use it. As for Germans and their ‘aryan’ super race theories, nobody pays any attention to them any longer.

  3. Indigenous does mean ‘originating where it is found’, however, in the context of the subject ‘Aryan’, the oriigin is definitely not indigenous to India.

Of course, Sanskrit is indigenous and so are Vedas and the Caste System, but NOT the ARYANS, the spirits that lived in the dreams of the historians.

The historians have greatly harmed the culture and the history of a civilized nation and shamed their own people and race by their involvement. The only honourable choice left for them is not to fool around anymore with FACTS.

In my opinion, there is no greater criminal act than to sow the seeds of hate and despise in the minds of the children of the world by teaching them false history.

  4. Your second para is not clear.

Indigenous means ‘originating where it is found’.

It is Romila Thapar who came up with the ‘migration’ theory when she found that she could not hold out for a full scale invasion in the face of the evidence.

I remember Sita Ram Goel sending her a query asking for her evidence for a migration. She never replied to him.

  5. Thank you, Admin, for the clarification. During the Text-Book Revision around 2005 in California, the historians agreed to water down invasion into a migration, thus all that destruction, demolition and annihilation turned into a peaceful assimilation. However, this come-down does not provide them with a clean slate. They are still holding credits for providing the language Sanskrit, the Rigveda and the most efficient social system of Caste Management.

Now, the time has come to let go these remaining credts – Aryans were indigenous to India. Yes, the dream that the historians had, starting their long journey from Scandinavia in Europe, passing through the region of Caspian Sea, settling in the mountaineous region of Iran for centuries, finally arrived in Indostan, is nearing an end, it is time to wake up and own up, unless have no guts.

  6. Can all those desperate to prove that they have gora lineage prove that there is any evidence of the existence of the VEDAS Sanatana dharma back in their so called places of origin…..these are paid perfidious denialists who are frantically scrambling for anti HINDU backers….

  7. Note that the report’s title “US historian insists ‘Aryans were indigenous to India’” belongs to the London newspaper Daily Mail. In fact their report title in full is “Right-wing US historian insists ‘Aryans were indigenous to India'”.

Dr Frawley is not ‘right wing’ anything. He is a Vedic and Sanskrit scholar and ayurvedic physician who should be addressed as Pandit Vamadeva Shastri.

He called his lecture presentation “Aryan Theory in the Light of Textual Evidences” which has quite a different meaning.

To the credit of the Daily Mail, they did report the essence of the lecture for their large British Hindu readership.

No Indian newspaper bothered to report the lecture’s content (though two papers carried the announcement of the lecture at Delhi University) or describe the high profile audience that attended it.

The terms ‘arya’ and ‘dravida’ are used in the Veda, though not in any racial context. ‘Aryavarta’ referred to north central India from Kurukshetra to Ayodhya.

But yes, the Europeans, particularly the Germans, did indeed pervert the meaning of the word ‘aryan’, turning it into a conquering race rather than an honorific.

  8. Thank you, Virendra, for pointing out the suttle points in reporting. I have great respect for Dr Frawley, I hope that he would give some further thoughts in respect of the word “Aryan”.

This word is an English word representing a fictional superior race over-powering an inferior fictional race of Dravidian (English word). The existence of this word in the form of ‘Aryans were indigenous to India’, would allow the complex to continue to exist, in turn your efforts to rejuvenate Hinduism would fail.

There are no equivalent Sanskrit words for the fictional races of Aryan and Dravidian, the main characters of the fictional Aryan Invasion Theory, that would describe the nature of qualities of these two fictional races.

Perhaps, it is high time for Hinduism to say ‘Adieus’ to these two words.

  9. The report is rudimentary. Can’t expect anything better from English language press where even reporters don’t bother to hide their anti-Hindu prejudices. So, those who reject the Aryan Invasion Theory are right-wing historians, while those who champion it are “noted historians.” Noted indeed for their bias, prejudice, ignorance and arrogance and intolerance. The opposite of right-wing is left-wing and not “noted.”

There is nothing right-wing about rejecting a conjecture not supported by any evidence either in ancient literature or archaeology. “David Frawley’s right-wing credentials are well-known,” fumes Jha. But then Jha’s and Thapar’s credentials are also known. The days when these so-called eminent historians could win the debate merely by labelling their adversaries are over.

Jha laments “Where were they all these years? Why all of a sudden they have come out. This shows they have a backing now.” They have been around for decades. There is nothing sudden about their views or presence. What is new is that they now get access to mainstream platforms which they were denied earlier and the likes of Jha are forced to take note of them, even if dismissively.

  10. Dr Frawley informs me that the lecture at Delhi University was a Power Point presentation. So there is no written text. As he is travelling, he will supply a written text later.
