Illegal slaughter house in Chromepet near Chennai.Chennai: The National Green Tribunal‘s southern bench on Friday directed the Chennai Corporation to file a detailed report on the steps it has taken to close down the illegal slaughter houses in the city.

The bench, comprising Justice Chokkalingam and expert member R Nagendran, said a report submitted to it by the corporation on November 29 was not satisfactory. Directing the civic body to submit a detailed report, the bench adjourned the matter to January 22.

The tribunal’s direction came on a complaint filed by People for Cattle in India (PFCI) which sought its direction to the corporation to clamp down on 20 places where illegal slaughter animals is taking place.

When the matter came up for hearing on Friday, the bench asked the key respondents—the Chennai Corporation and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board—on the steps taken to curb the menace of such slaughter houses.

In its reply, a corporation official said measures were being undertaken under the Public Health Act. “Raid was conducted in Anna Nagar zone and around 22,400kg of rotting meat was destroyed,” said the official.

Expert member Nagendran pointed out that around 3,000 liters of water was used in processing a kilogram of meat and this was being done in a scenario where the city was suffering a severe water shortage. – Times of India, 6 December 2013
