“Is it coincidence that, for example, so much money has been given to the Kejriwala NGOs when the Kejriwalas are openly and rabidly anti-democratic? Is it coincidence that the Ford Foundation’s own country, for all its pro-democracy propaganda, has a history of propping up dictators all over the world? Has the Ford Foundation no agenda behind the money it doles out? It has given millions of rupees to Kejriwala NGOs. Do you seriously believe it expects nothing in return from them?” – Krishen Kak
The Ramlila ground that had been spruced up at public cost for a private groups public tamasha, has now been cleaned up again at public cost. However, during the tamasha, while its principal nayak ostensibly fasted, his followers feasted – and questions were and are and continue to be asked about where the money came from, not just for the food and the festivity during the tamasha, but for all the expense to organize it and keep this going.
Inside the historic Maidan, the agitators had their appetite for agitation whetted by loads of puree-sabzi, chole-chawal, kadhi-chawal, cartons of biscuits, truck-loads of bananas, crates of water, soft drinks and nimbu pani. In my two decade long career as reporter, I have not seen such felicitation for the delegates to any public rally of any political party. We repeatedly raised the question of funding of political rallies, I hope we all gather the courage to audit the expenditure incurred on the jamboree recently witnessed at Ramlila Maidan.
When I talk of audit, I just do not mean just auditing the well-kept account books of the organisations run by members of Team Anna, but those organisations which put up the public kitchens etc. It should be explained how come in a nation where crores fail to get two square meals a day, so much money was spent on food to keep an agitation going. Make public the names of these organisations and the names of the people behind them and vouch that the money spent by them was all clean, free of any taint.”[1]
“Well-kept account books”?
Earlier analyses established that the accounts for the Arvind Kejriwal-promoted IAC/PCRF omitted much more than they declared – and this from someone who not only has an income-tax background and who still has an intimate connection to the sarkari income-tax service, but who crusades for transparency and accountability in government. Indeed, his PCRF’s accounts that showed nothing after 31/3/09 continued that way till at least 29/8/11.[2]
Would Anna Hazare allow to public servants hauled up before his Jokepal the same excuse of “a mistake” he expects the public to accept for the corruption and illegalities exposed in his own NGOs?
Would Kejriwal allow to public servants hauled up before his Jokepal the same excuse of “oversight” he trotted out for the opacity of the accounts of his own NGOs?
Kiran Bedi fancies the ghunghat as a dramatic prop. Like the ghunghat that coyly conceals, the Kejriwal and Bedi and(Medha) Patkar NGOs hide more than they show. And the earlier analyses showed the interesting connections to foreign and foreign-funded organizations of the Bedi, Patkar and (Prashant) Bhushan NGOs. This essay updates that with the Kejriwal NGOs.[3]
Kejriwal accuses Indian policy of being dictated to by the World Bank. Arundhati Roy accuses the Kejriwalas of being led by a World Bank agenda, and funded by the Ford Foundation. And that brings us to the foreign hand at which the ruling party officially pointed.
Yes, indisputably there is a foreign hand. The experience of West-funded NGOs instigating so-called Flower/Coloured revolutions is too recent to ignore, especially in the destabilization and break-up of the Soviet Union. The Vigil book gives irrefutable data of Western money flowing into India to promote and support the anti-nation industry of many well-known “civil society activists,” including the ones Dr. N.S. Rajaram calls the “Sonia Gandhians”.
[This has been updated on http://www.vijayvaani.com/ and http://www.vigilonline.com/]
Our Western donor du jour, courtesy Arundhati Roy, is the US-based Ford Foundation (FF).[4] So, let us look at the Ford Foundation’s kripa in India.
Click on http://is.gd/xib9rF. It opens onto http://www.fordfoundation.org/grants/search. Open “Regions” and select “India, Nepal and Sri Lanka”. Continue down (below “Regions”) and tick “Include Non-Initiative Grants”. You’ll get a list of 320 grantees.
Even a cursory look will impress with the rivers of money that the Ford Foundation is pouring into the organizations it favours in our country.
I’ve picked just a few grantees, mainly connected in some way or other with this so-called “civil society war against corruption” and primarily from the FF-funded initiative in “Promoting Transparent, Effective and Accountable Government” and “Strengthening Civil Society”. There are some others too but, really, the entire list merits study, especially the FF interest in tribal communities and areas (where, as it happens, there is a powerful Christian conversion apparatus at work).[5]
1. AMAN Public Charitable Trust $450,000 (2008, 2010) (The same mentioned in Appendix 11 of the Vigil book; it gets influential Indian and foreign support – http://www.amanpanchayat.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=27&Itemid=374).
2. Centre for Budget Governance and Accountability $650,000 (2007, 2010) (Governing Board includes Sandeep Dikshit, MP, who was active in the negotiations to get Hazare back to the dining table – http://www.cbgaindia.org/about_board.php).
3. Centre for Communication and Development Studies $480,000 (2007, 2010) (Headed by John Samuel, with links to National Centre for Advocacy Studies. He has helped to establish more than 10 organisations and networks at the national and international level, including the Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability above, Social Watch India, Asia Media Forum and CCDS – http://www.ccds.in/team.htm . He has links to IAC founder-member Devinder Sharma, Binu Thomas formerly of ActionAid, and Kalpana Sharma of The Hindu – http://infochangeindia.org/about-us.html).
4. Centre for Policy Research (CPR) $687,100 (2008, 2009, 2010) (A strong presence of former bureaucrats; president is Prof. Pratap Bhanu Mehta http://www.cprindia.org/page/governing-body).
5. Centre for Study of Society and Secularism $301,000 (2007, 2009) (Headed by Asghar Ali Engineer; other secular worthies include Ram Puniyani, who features in http://www.vigilonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=956&Itemid=1&limit=1&limitstart=10 and is linked to Harsh Mander’s ANHAD – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram_Puniyani, and Admiral Ramdas who features prominently in the Vigil book – http://www.csss-isla.com/governingbody.htm. CSSS’ listed donors are mainly American, German, Dutch – and the notorious ActionAid – http://www.csss-isla.com/ourdonors.htm).
6. Centre for the Study of Developing Societies $599,000 (2008) (Its “faculty” includes Ashish Nandy, Madhu Kishwar, Yogendra Yadav – http://www.csds.in/faculty.htm, and it sponsored a very controversial seminar on J&K at the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library, New Delhi).
8. Dalit Foundation (DF) $3,510,000 (2007, 2008)
9. Christian Dalit Liberation Movement $400,000 (2008, 2010)
10. Indian Institute of Dalit Studies $450,000 (2007, 2010). (Note that Udit Raj, national chairman, All-India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations, called “the ongoing protest against corruption by Anna Hazare unconstitutional … and a Bahujan Lokpal Bill would soon be presented to the Parliament’s Standing Committee, which will be representative of Dalits, Muslims and other minority communities” – “’Save reservation’ rally”, The Hindu, Delhi, Aug 24, 2011, p.3; http://theindianawaaz.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3618&catid=12&Itemid=63; http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/article2391133.ece. 11. Council for Social Development $300,000 (2007) (Headed by former Foreign Secretary Muchkund Dubey; includes R.K. Pachauri, Amit Bhaduri and has influential links to government and government NGOs – http://www.csdindia.org/our-people/management/general-body-gb).
12. Jagori Rural $100,000 (2008) (Kamla Bhasin is a founder and also a trustee of Harsh Mander’s ANHAD. Jagori’s Executive Committee includes Martin Macwan who features in the Vigil book – http://jagori.org/about-jagori/our-team/; http://www.anhadin.net/article1.html).
13. Jamia Millia Islamia $150,000 (2009)
14. Jawaharlal Nehru University $400,000 (2010)
15. Kabir $397,000 (2008, 2011) (Has Manish Sisodia as founding-member – http://www.kabir.org.in/indexx.htm, and Kejriwal in its Governing Body – http://www.kabir.org.in/indexx.htm. Has received crores from foreign agencies – http://beyondheadlines.in/2011/08/it%E2%80%99s-official-%E2%80%93-us-based-ford-foundation-funding-anna%E2%80%99s-movement ).
16. National Centre for Advocacy Studies $435,000 (2008, 2011) (http://www.ncasindia.org/ doesn’t tell you who founded it – John Samuel? – and who heads it, but its “partners” include the Aman Trust (above), the Centre for Social Justice whose trustees include Upendra Baxi, Vijay Parmar of Janvikas (also a Ford Foundation grantee – $200,000 in 2007), Syeda Hameed of the Planning Commission, and retired high court judge RA Mehta – http://www.centreforsocialjustice.net/board.html).
17. National Foundation for India $2,500,000 (2007) (This features in Appendix 11 of the Vigil book; its trustees in 2006 included N Ram of The Hindu, Syeda Hameed, Mallika Sarabhai, an FF representative – and Mr. Manmohan Singh! It records that “The Ford Foundation provided pioneering support to set up NFI as an independent Indian Foundation to promote civil society action and public deliberation for social change.” – http://www.nfi.org.in/index.php/about-nfi. Its website includes Ratan Tata and S.P. Godrej amongst its former trustees and there is no longer specific mention of an FF representative – http://www.nfi.org.in/index.php/trustees . Its current trustees include Nirmala Lakshman of The Hindu, former bureaucrat Probir Sen who was also managing director of Air India, Mihir Shah of the Planning Commission, and Ramchandra Guha – http://www.nfi.org.in/index.php/trustees/current ).
18. National Social Watch $200,000 (2010) (http://socialwatchindia.net/about-us/ about-us is flowery prose but no names).
19. OXFAM India $200,000 (2010) (Features in Appendix 11 of the Vigil book; receives huge amounts from the British government as a tool of British foreign policy in India).
20. People’s Education and Rights Trust (PERT) $250,000 (2009) (http://pertindia.org/ ; primary supporter is a Christian “international development agency” called Signpost International http://www.signpost-international.org/cms/frontend/viewpage.php?id=58 ).
21. Sabrang Trust $250,000 (2009) (A Teesta Setalvad enterprise. Google “Sabrang Trust” – you get Sabrang Communications which calls itself Trust at http://www.sabrang.com/museum.htm but then is a private limited company at the same website at http://www.sabrang.com/aboutus.htm. The Trust is claimed to have been founded in 1933 – http://www.sabrang.com/auction/pdf/pg%201%20to%2013.pdf.
The private limited company is also claimed to have been founded in 1933 – http://www.karmayog.org/nonprofits/nposubcatdisplay.asp?r=219&catid=35&loc=mumbai&PageNo=28 which also makes the Trust c/o Sabrang Communications & Publishing Pvt. Ltd.
There’s also http://www.sabrang.com/ which, in its “About Us”, says nothing about a Trust. Setalvad does this kind of one organization fronting for another with her CJP too – http://www.vijayvaani.com/FrmPublicDisplayArticle.aspx?id=305; so does Harsh Mander in fundraising for the US-based Indian Muslim Relief Committee/Indian Muslim Relief and Charities – Appendix 11 of the Vigil book).
22. Society for Participatory Research in Asia $400,000 (2007, 2010) (Headed by Rajesh Tandon who features in Appendix 11 of the Vigil book. Its Governing Board includes Lalita Ramdas and Bibek Debroy – http://pria.org/en/mi-about-pria/4-a-governing-board; has extensive and very influential foreign support – http://www.pria.org/en/c-strategic-partners).
23. South Asia Centre for Policy Studies $153,603 (2010) (Lists partners that include CPR above – http://www.saceps.org/content.php?function=partner_institution; its executive committee includes Muchkund Dubey as co-chair – http://www.saceps.org/content.php?function=executive_committee; Amartya Sen and Gowher Rizvi (former FF head in India) are international advisors – http://www.saceps.org/content.php?function=international_advisors).
And this is just a sample. And this is just one foreign donor.
Note the interconnections. It is a hunter’s net cast over our nation. Are we to believe it is out of blessed altruism that all these fortunes from abroad are being poured into Kejriwala and associated coffers? Are we to be so naïve as to forget about the realpolitik of Western foreign policy?
To take just this Ford Foundation, is it sheer coincidence that it gives such vast amounts in tribal areas where there is powerful Christian evangelism? Have we already forgotten the missionary-colonial policy of divide-and-rule to which we were subject? Never heard of the US government-supported Joshua Project?[6]
Is it coincidence that, for example, so much money has been given to the Kejriwala NGOs when the Kejriwalas are openly and rabidly anti-democratic?[7] Is it coincidence that the Ford Foundation’s own country, for all its pro-democracy propaganda, has a history of propping up dictators all over the world? Has the Ford Foundation no agenda behind the money it doles out? It has given millions of rupees to Kejriwala NGOs. Do you seriously believe it expects nothing in return from them?[8]
Recall the saying: “He who pays the piper calls the tune”. Missionary-neocolonial foreign agencies pay and the Kejriwalas and Sonia Gandhians sing (and dance) to the foreign tune.
This tune is called the destabilizing and break-up of our nation.
Recall the insistence of the Kejriwalas on giving foreigners a veto power in the selection of our country’s Lokpal. That their Jan Lokpal be called the Jan Fordpal is therefore a comment not far off the mark![9]
Caveat – certainly corruption must be battled. But, if we believe in democracy, then it must be fought by strengthening the institutions of our democracy, not undermining them. “There are three very public figures who are fighting corruption at three different levels and in three different ways. One does it as head of the administration he heads. The second does it by arousing mass awareness against (particularly, black money) corruption [janajagruti – till regrettably he over-reached himself]. The third does it by using the judicial route to enforce the anti-corruption law. All three are doing it from within a parliamentary democracy – and doing it effectively. I support that initiative” – my post dt. 23/4/11 at http://www.vijayvaani.com/FrmPublicDisplayArticle.aspx?id=1743.

♦ For all his many, much-touted virtues, Anna Hazare (and Team Anna) had little time and compassion for those who took the threatened fast-unto-death seriously. In village Janapanka, Patna, a young and emotional Arun Das died fasting on 24 August. Team Anna expressed no regret. He hailed from Kamira village, district Boudh, Odisha. Worse, as youthful enthusiasts following the Anna fast noted, no formal notice was taken of his death and the report quickly vanished from the IAC update, though the IAC page on Facebook and @Janlokpal on Twitter had both announced the death.
Arun Das was actually a follower of Baba Ramdev, and it was the Yoga Guru who first announced his death from Ramlila Maidan. Baba’s organisation also made a formal announcement. IAC followed on Facebook and Twitter, and then lapsed into inexplicable silence.

♦ A similar amnesia occurred in the case of Dinesh Yadav who, shouting pro-Hazare slogans, burnt himself alive at Kisan Ghat, Delhi – http://in.news.yahoo.com/disbelief-praise-fear-dinesh-yadavs-village-120413198.html.
He was survived by his wife and five children.
Team Anna expressed no regret. Team Anna, for all its foreign resources, is not known to have offered any support to the families of Arun Das and Dinesh Yadav.
♦ Contrast this with the case of Rajbala Malik, a victim of police brutality at Ramlila Maidan in the wee hours of June 4, 2011. As soon as his externment order from Delhi ended, Baba Ramdev visited Rajbala in hospital and offered all assistance by his Delhi Mahila Patanjali Yoga Samiti. “All medical expenses of Rajbala and other people injured during police action at Ramila Maidan will be borne by the Patanjali,” said Ramdev – http://expressbuzz.com/topnews/pm-politically-dishonest-baba-ramdev/281995.html .

You cannot ask questions like — what about the right of Parliamentarians who represent the country, to choose whether they want this version of the Bill or not?… is the right to say “No, we disagree”, no longer available?….. if no political party is willing to support the Jan Lokpal Bill outright, does that mean the Parliament must be cast aside … Parliament and the rest of India be damned” – Revati Laul, http://www.tehelka.com/story_main50.asp?filename=Ne030911coverstory3.asp . Recall MK Gandhi’s bold declaration that he would allow Partition only over his dead body. He then broke his word. Likewise, the current media-manufactured mahatma, after a like bold declaration, broke his word. Please learn to ignore Team Anna. The social media is giving them a bigger than life size image. Team Anna are the tacit correspondents of the social media, is the impression one is left with. When i read or view – Team Anna’s Talibanization – I juts skew it.

Ironically by your argument, all of us are guilty of some association. I think all this far fetched connecting of dots with dotted lines is just that…dotted lines. I think many of the so called intellectuals like Arundati Roy are upset that a few (good or bad) have been able to get some change in the country. Foreign funding in charity is also in all the rajiv gandhi or indira gandhi foundations and also in places like sabarmati ashram! One cannot tie a motive to anything and everything…it helps brighten up life though!. Lets extend the argument,,,by giving the internet & web, the american companies have found a way to influence our thoughts by letting us common folk access to information…does that also mean dots can be connected.
I think the problem with people who are after Anna & team (but somehow seem to find Ramdev, the crackpot a person of integrity) is their own inferiority complex fueled by an ambition to be seen as Rahul Or Sonia gandhi’s supporters.

Hi Sachin,
Regret responding pretty late. Been through personal health issues.
Please refer my LINKEDIN Profile – Suhas Palekar – where your last paragraph stands answered.
I am not sure if you heard a phrase “Turning a Nelson’s Eye” or if you been through a FIRO-B an aptitude test which has a “Blind Window” concept.
I do not dare write or speak unless i practice.
Please seek an answer – to some simple posers if you were born in 1950
1. Have you heard of the BDD Chwal riots in Mumbai? I was a peace volunteer.
2. I have worked with less priviliged and street children.
3. I have worked with Senior Citizens, Challenged people.
4. I worked as a private secretary with late Prof SS Varde Minister for Education GoM. We laid the Best Practices for others to emulate and there was no nepotism.
5. I worked for Corporates and treated all with Human Dignity. I won people from civil service to union members and all without paying a bribe.
6. I worked with civil society organizations and realized their integrity was a question mark.
7. I come from a premier Institute.
8. I worked with the JP movement, sacrificed my career and organized Satyagarahs –
9. Sikh Riots I was a peace volunteer and protected communities during all communal riots, right until 1993.
10. I was beaten for One Village One well for breaking the caste barriers;

13. Cleaned toilets in the Chawls of Mumbai.
My life’s books of accounts are clean and when they needed an audit finding was negative cleansed myself.
Hence with all humility, I do not have a placard around my neck or wear a cap saying I am Anna. Gandhi too did not wear the cap. It is the magic of the charkha which produced a headgear and people called it Gandhi Cap. Let us respect him and not dance at Rajghat where in 1978 the very people who danced were the same people in the 1978 Cabinet who later split the party and became the Lotus which blossoms in muck and closes the same evening. There multiple and therefore appeared disciplined, but the fact they are in murky waters. zHence neither does he have a Bharat Ratna nor a Noble Peace Prize – he leaves orphans like me – but there are Sharmila, Sui of Burma , Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr ( assassinated ) and Barack Obama, besides many others.
Before I sign off please do read the meaning of Glasnost and Perstorika – of Mikhail Gorbhachev who fell to the dynamics former USA President Ronald Reagan. In case India has to Balkanize it will be over my dead body. Please do not forget Khalistan, NEFA state demands. They say it needs a Muhammad Tughlak to just ignite the fire and

Swami Agnivesh: Why are donations to Team Anna a secret? – TOI
NEW DELHI: Questioning the use of funds donated by the public to Team Anna, activist Swami Agnivesh on Sunday claimed that money was deposited in the trust run by Arvind Kejriwal from which the names of major team members were missing, Times Now reported.
Agnivesh, who had on Saturday alleged that Kejriwal has siphoned off Rs 70-80 lakh donated by people to India Against Corruption (IAC), headed by Anna Hazare, by diverting it to a trust run by him, said Anna does not have his name in the Public Cause Research Foundation run by Kejriwal.
“Even Justice Santosh Hegde, who has a clean image, does not have his name in the trust. So, the main members of the team were not part of the Trust and the old trust where Kejriwal and his members were part…the money was deposited in their name,” he alleged.
Agnivesh said Anna was keen to have new trust and include new members. He said Hazare himself had asked Kejriwal to put on the website the details of donations received by them in the core committee meeting. Hazare had announced that he had asked his associates to conduct a mini-audit and put the statement on website.
Anna wanted to complete the deposits and calculations by October 15 and upload the information on the website, Agnivesh said.
Maintaining that his protest in only for transparency, he said, “I have said this (to give details of accounts) because if they will do it as soon as possible, there won’t be any doubt and question. If they will delay, people would question why the accounts are not given”.
“I am not blaming Kejriwal that he is deliberately doing so and does not want transparency. I am also not saying there is some fraud and corruption in accounts,” Angivesh said, insisting that his protest is only for transparency.
“India Against Corruption campaign is about transparency. When we are fighting against corruption, then transparency is the main and important part of it, accountability is second part of it,” he said.
“In the middle there were questions raised on Indian Vision Foundation and on Kiran Bedi’s flight fare controversy and all then it has become more important to check the accounts of old trusts,” he said.
Agnivesh was ousted from Team Anna following the surfacing of a video clip during the August agitation of Hazare in which he was purportedly shown asking a person, suspected by Team Anna to a Union minister, to deal strongly with the crusader. “Lakhs and lakhs of rupees have come. Where have they gone,” Agnivesh had asked.
On being questioned how he arrived at this figure of over Rs 80 lakh, he had said one of the organizers had announced in Ramlila Maidan that they had already received Rs 50 lakh and urged no more donations. “Even after this, they received donations,” he alleged.
Reacting to the charges, all that Kejriwal in an sms message was: “Did he give any evidence?”
The clouds of controversy around Team Anna have been darkening.
Two members of the 26 member core committee – Magsaysay award winner Rajendra Singh and Gandhian activist PV Rajagopal – had resigned from the IAC earlier this week to protest the politicization of the movement by Kejriwal. Rajendra Singh also described him as “autocratic”.

NELSON.A. ROCKEFELLER was one of the the founders and one time president of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund that established the Ramon Magsaysay Award. This news piece given below leaves no doubt that N .A. Rockefeller was a racist for whom the lives of the black people had no value. Now, who will tell Arvind Kejriwall and other recipients of Magsaysay Awards for “emergent leadership” that the monies they received as award are stained in blood.
” Rockefeller on the Attica Raid, From Boastful to Subdued”
United Press International
By SAM ROBERTS
Published: September 12, 2011
Hours after 1,000 New York State troopers, sheriff’s deputies and correction officers stormed Attica prison to crush a four-day inmate revolt in 1971, Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller telephoned President Richard M. Nixon to claim victory unambiguously.
At the time, it appeared that State Police sharpshooters who had fired on the prison yard had killed mostly inmates, not some of the prison guards who had been held hostage inside. And because the inmates were black and the guards white, the governor and the president seemed to suggest, the American public would undoubtedly endorse the state’s assault on Attica.
“They did a fabulous job,” Rockefeller told Nixon. “It really was a beautiful operation.”
In a follow-up conversation the next day, as grimmer details began to emerge about the assault, in which 29 inmates and 10 hostages were killed, a more subdued Rockefeller acknowledged that his initial boast about the sharpshooters’ precision was premature.
“Well you know, this is one of those things,” Rockefeller said. “You can’t have sharpshooters picking off the prisoners when the hostages are there with them, at a distance with tear gas, without maybe having a few accidents.”
“Well, you saved a lot of guards,” Nixon replied. “That was worth it.”
Recordings of the conversations, which are being published in full for the first time, provide insights into the nation’s bloodiest prison uprising, which remained an indelible blot on Rockefeller’s 15-year record as governor, and ended 40 years ago Tuesday. In the recordings, the governor speaks with seeming candor about some unexplained elements of the episode, including his decision not to go in person to the prison, in western New York, to broker a peaceful resolution, as the inmates and their negotiators had asked. Rockefeller is also heard striking an ingratiating tone with the president, predicting to Nixon, who was preparing his re-election campaign, “You’re going to have a great year.”
The revolt began on Sept. 9, 1971, precipitated by unaddressed inmate complaints about grievance procedures, educational opportunities and other issues, investigations concluded. Though an agreement appeared near on many of the inmates’ demands, Rockefeller approved the assault when negotiations over amnesty had stalled and it appeared that the hostages’ lives were in danger. (Inmates were found to have killed one guard and three fellow inmates during the uprising.)
“Nixon’s strategy for dealing with the Attica massacre was to minimize press coverage, to spin the story in favor of the government, and to assail members of the press,” said Theresa C. Lynch, an adjunct professor of history at the University of New Hampshire at Manchester who is writing a book about Attica and discovered the tapes at the National Archives in Washington. “I think the tapes reveal that.
“He also began a campaign to convince the American public that Rockefeller had acted correctly in not going to Attica to quell the uprising and in retaking the prison by storm. This campaign was based on racism and lack of concern and callous disregard for the lives of prisoners.”
Rockefeller reveals in the tapes that he proceeded with the assault even as state officials had figured that an armed assault might cost the lives of all the 39 hostages and hundreds of inmates. And he discusses his refusal to consider granting amnesty or going to the scene — a gesture recommended by his own correction commissioner — suggesting that he did not want to capitulate to the inmates and set a precedent. “This separated the sheep from the goats,” Rockefeller declared.
Sixty-two inmates and one guard were charged with crimes stemming from the revolt, and eight inmates were convicted. Charges against the guard were dismissed. A state commission criticized the governor for not going to Attica, while acknowledging that his presence might not have prevented the violence. The commission found that the riot was driven by black inmates unwilling to bow to the “petty humiliations and racism that characterize prison life” and that guards inflicted brutal reprisals after the prison was retaken.
In 1976, Gov. Hugh L. Carey pardoned seven former Attica inmates, commuted the sentence of an eighth and said no disciplinary action would be taken against 20 state troopers and guards involved in the assault. Inmates who were beaten sued the state, which settled in 2000 for $8 million. Five years later, the state settled for $12 million with surviving guards and the families of slain hostages.
Richard Norton Smith, who is completing a biography of Rockefeller, said of the governor’s version of the events: “Some of this is tailored, clumsily, to impress Nixon. But it also, sadly, reflects the fact that Rockefeller by this stage of his governorship bore little resemblance to the eager, straight-talking, ambitious yet principled rookie of 1959-60.”
Professor Lynch shared the tapes she had discovered with Scott Christianson, a former New York criminal justice official who has written on Attica and who made the tapes available to The New York Times.
The first conversation came when the president returned a call from the governor, who wanted to brief him. Nixon knew the call was being recorded; Rockefeller apparently did not.

Correction: September 14, 2011
Because of an editing error, an article on Tuesday about conversations between Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller and President Richard M. Nixon about the Attica prison uprising characterized incorrectly, in some copies, Rockefeller’s decision not to go to the scene. His refusal suggested that he did not want to capitulate to the inmates, not that he did want to capitulate to them.
A version of this article appeared in print on September 13, 2011, on page A24 of the New York edition with the headline: Rockefeller on the Attica Raid, From Boastful to Subdued.Link:http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/13/nyregion/rockefeller-initially-boasted-to-nixon-about-attica-raid.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=rockefeller&st=cse

Everybody knows the Ford Foundation is the social and cultural front of the CIA. But somehow this knowledge just never impacts the man in the street. Powerful people can get away with anything in Delhi even when their dubious connections are known. Part of the problem is that the mainstream media protects them by ignoring their foreign associations. The media itself is foreign-controlled, so what can we expect.

No Ford in Israel’s Future?
By Elliot Jager, Jewish Ideas Daily
With little fanfare, the Ford Foundation has initiated a phased withdrawal from its long, largely behind-the-scenes campaign to influence Israeli politics. News reports have focused mostly on the foundation’s 23-year-long patronage of the New Israel Fund (NIF), whose beneficiaries include a number of pressure groups that colluded with the now-discredited Goldstone Commission Report.
But Ford’s involvement in Israel’s affairs goes well beyond the NIF. The foundation, today with $10.2 billion in assets, was created in 1936 by Edsel Ford, son of the automobile magnate, Nazi sympathizer, and notorious anti-Semite Henry Ford. Since then, it has disbursed a staggering $16 billion in grants largely devoted to “progressive” causes promoting “social change worldwide.” In June 1967, the foundation’s head was McGeorge Bundy, former foreign-policy aide to President Lyndon Johnson. On the very day Israel claimed victory in the Six-Day war, Johnson recalled Bundy to the White House to help coax Israel out of the just-liberated territories of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza.
In hindsight, Bundy’s involvement, though failing to produce any tangible results, can be seen as driving the foundation’s persistent fixation on the Jewish state thenceforward. Ford became a benefactor of writers, researchers, and groups devoted to ending Israel’s “occupation” as a supposed oppressor state routinely brutalizing its Palestinian Arab victims. By the 1980s, the foundation had helped bankroll a campaign, the West Bank Data Project, to delegitimize Jewish life beyond the Green Line.
The first declaration of a Palestinian state—by Yasir Arafat, in Tunis, on November 15, 1988—followed a blueprint drafted by a Ford grantee. Ford also supported the grand-sounding Institute for Middle East Peace and Development, essentially a platform allowing its founder, Stephen P. Cohen, to be cited incessantly by the New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman as an “expert” calumniator of Israeli policies. Similarly, Ian Lustick, the intellectual godfather of efforts to dissociate American Jewish backing for Israel from support for its settlement and security policies, would also go on to work for Ford.
The foundation remained on the periphery of an interlocking directorate of agencies, including the Foundation for Peace in the Middle East, that conducted a withering pressure campaign to force Israel back to the 1949 armistice lines. Another agency, the now-defunct International Center for Peace in the Middle East, provided a front for disaffected Israeli and American Jews including Abba Eban and Rita Hauser to lobby for precipitous U.S. recognition of Arafat’s PLO.
There is more. In 2001, Ford became a major funder of the Arab and far-Left groups behind the UN-sponsored and virulently anti-Israel Durban Conference. With a few degrees of separation, it also continued to back the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against the Jewish state. Whether by supporting innocuous-sounding agencies like One Voice and the Peres Center for Peace, or by bankrolling tendentious opinion surveys on behalf of the so-called Geneva Initiative, Ford has contributed significantly to efforts at undermining the possibility of reaching a negotiated solution. It has also lent moral support to J Street as that organization takes Lustick’s crusade to re-define the term “pro-Israel” to ever more grotesque extremes.
Looking back, Ford’s directors may well feel vindicated. At the very least, Ford’s outlay has helped damage Israel’s security, weakened its international standing, and worsened its domestic divisions. More particularly, the fund’s heavy investment in stoking a multi-layered campaign to force an Israeli withdrawal to the 1949 armistice lines—irrespective of Palestinian belligerence—does indeed seem to have gained inexorable momentum and, now, the evident backing of the Obama White House.
Will Ford-supported enterprises like the New Israel Fund be able to carry on alone after 2013? That will hinge on where things stand on the day the foundation cuts the money line, and on how successful NIF will be in continuing to obfuscate the activities of its dependent agencies.

Know your esteemed NAC member “Oh-so-secular” , “friend of Muslim, The great Harsh Mander.
” On the 15th of August this year, ironically the day India celebrates as Independence Day, a forum member pointed out to an association that should have [or, has already had] serious, debilitating impact on the governance of the country. A gentleman, named Harsh Mander [on the left], who is currently on the board of members of a national body, ostensibly named India’s “National Advisory Council” [NAC] was found to be on the working group of an organisation that called itself the Justice Foundation. His name, as can be seen, has been listed on the organisation’s website. This particular Working Group, as they’ve called it, had been set up in relation to the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir.
Now, the reason Harsh Mander’s association with this Justice Foundation is a potential breach of security at the upper echelons of India’s power structure, & compromises the credibility & integrity of the NAC is because the organisation has been found to be run by an American, named Ghulam Nabi Fai. The person [Fai] has since been arrested by the American authorities, though now out on bail, for acting on behalf of Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter Services Intelligence [ISI], taking orders from them to further its agenda in America, in a manner that contravenes U.S. laws.”
