“We must stand against Hinduphobia. My state of Georgia became the first US state to pass a resolution condemning anti-Hindu hate.” – US Congressman Sanford Bishop
In a powerful address celebrating the growing political and civic influence of the Indian-American community, US Congressman Sanford Bishop (D-GA) strongly condemned religious bigotry and praised his home state for leading national efforts against anti-Hindu sentiment.
Speaking before a packed audience of Indian-Americans at a recent community event, Bishop drew thunderous applause as he called for unity and vigilance against rising prejudice.
“We must stand against Hinduphobia,” Congressman Bishop declared, addressing the crowd. “My state of Georgia became the first US state to pass a resolution condemning anti-Hindu hate.”
The resolution Bishop referred to, House Resolution 701, made waves nationally when it was passed by the Georgia General Assembly.
Spearheaded by the Atlanta chapter of the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), the measure officially defined Hinduphobia as “a set of antagonistic, destructive, and derogatory attitudes and behaviors towards Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) and Hindus.”
The resolution specifically targeted documented instances of hate crimes and the institutionalised bias that many Hindu-Americans face, particularly in academic and digital spaces.
By passing the measure, Georgia established a blueprint that multiple US states and local municipalities have since sought to replicate.
Celebrating contributions, addressing hate
During his address, Congressman Bishop said that the fight against Hinduphobia goes hand-in-hand with recognising the immense value the diaspora brings to the United States.
The Georgia resolution explicitly details those contributions, noting the community’s impact across critical sectors including medicine, engineering, information technology, hospitality, and finance. It also credits Hindu traditions, such as yoga, ayurveda, meditation, and the arts, with profoundly enriching American culture.
Following the historic resolution, Georgia’s advocacy efforts have only intensified. Governor Brian Kemp officially proclaimed October as Hindu Heritage Month, and state lawmakers have continued pushing the envelope by introducing bipartisan legislation, such as Senate Bill 375, to formally account for anti-Hindu bias within state penal codes. – Firstpost, 24 June 2026
