Food grains amounting to crores of rupees, as much as 1,94, 502 tonnes, between 2005 and March 2013.
Based of a RTI query sought by Mumbai based activist Om Prakash Sharma, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has provided the information.
Sharma had filed the query last month, seeking information about the wastage of food grains in India. The report was received yesterday.
The report consists of data collected region-wise as well as commodity-wise, of stock that has been segregated as ‘non-issuable’ (damaged) for each year, for the 23 regions of the country.
According to the report, the stock of damaged food grains, at 95,075 MT in 2005-06 came down to 3,148 MT in 2012-13. The wastage was at 25,353 MT in 2006-07, 4,426 MT in 2007-08, and 20,114 in 2008-09.
Also mentioned in the report was that in the damaged stock, approximately 84 percent, or 16,3576 MT was rice, and 14 percent (26,543 MT) was wheat.
Punjab had the largest amount of damaged stock of food grains, about 50 percent, or 98,200 MT of the overall damage, while Maharashtra recorded 10 percent of the total loss, about 20,067 MT.
Sharma, speaking to reporters, expressed worry over the inability of the government in India to curb food grain wastage.
“At a time when so many people die of hunger in the country, there is so much of wastage of food grain taking place. Those responsible for this loss should be punished,” he said. – The Indian Republic, 12 february 2014

I am afraid that the info is typically Parliamentary,ie. evasive! The grains that are being sold/given in the Ration Shops is of very very poor quality! But, the official machinery manage to thrust it as ‘good’ and usable! Neither the basic statistics and info nor the follow up action to preserve the quality is extremely correct/ adequate in spite of the fact that India had established lots of Research Institutes and Agri Universities and thousands of highly knowledgeable Scientists! That is our Administration / Management / Politics! The Media also does not take any responsibility to drive towards the final end results in most of the cases!!
