I have over two hundred letters on my table complaining about illegal cow slaughter. Many of these complainants are groups who have stopped trucks stuffed with cows and calves, many of them dead of suffocation and injuries, only to have the police take a bribe and let the animals go. Uttar Pradesh has become one large slaughterhouse for cows with Mulayam Singh’s government giving licences for meat export slaughterhouses by the hundred. Rampur, Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Aligarh, Agra, this is the Muslim belt and thousands of cows are brought in daily to be killed. From Rajasthan they pour in to Mewat which is a 90% Muslim district. From the other side of Rajasthan they go in the thousands to Gujarat where they are killed in Porbandar, Daman and Diu, and then the meat is taken to Mumbai. Thousands go from all over Maharashtra to be killed at Deonar illegally. From Orissa and Bihar they are herded to West Bengal and go through to Bangladesh which has a beef export of 1 lakh tones a year without having any cows or buffaloes of its own. From Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka they are taken to Kerala where they are killed in the dozens of slaughterhouses on the border and then exported as meat to the Middle East. From Punjab, buyers with illegal certificates saying that they are for agricultural purposes bribe Laloo Prasad’s railway officials and stuff them into bogeys and take them to West Bengal. Delhi has 11,000 illegal slaughterhouses, small shanties in the slums that kill hundreds of cows brought in from Haryana. There a genocide going on with over two lakh cows being killed per day. This killing is happening hand in glove with the police and 
district magistrates who give false certificates every day allowing cows to be loaded onto trucks. The law is clear—not more than 4 cows can be carried in one truck. Everyday my organization catches trucks that have more than 50 cows in each.
Government looks the other way and boasts that we have the largest leather and meat export in the world. The fact that the entire leather industry is made from the skins of illegally killed cows or that the meat has come from young milch cows and their babies is irrelevant to them. The police are delighted with this crime—each truck pays the chungies and each policeman takes home thousands of bribe rupees every day from this killing. Every time we stop a truck, it is the policeman who defend and release the truck with its suffering cargo of squashed animals. Every week there is a cow selling fair in each district, supposedly for farmers. No farmer goes there to buy. The slaughter mafia bring their trucks and pick up hundreds of animals. One person who tried to stop this in Haryana was arrested by the police on the complaint of criminals, that she was stopping their work.
Go to Bihar—most villages have no cows in them. In Andhra Pradesh rustling is a major crime—people who hold up villagers at gunpoint and take their animals for slaughter. One old woman who tried to stop a cattle truck in Gorantla, Anantapur was beaten up in full sight of the village and the police. No one intervened as the men had guns. Within ten years we will have no cows. The story of the tiger is being repeated. The government kept giving false figures to the world—we have 9000 tigers or more. When an actual headcount was done, we have less than 300 and the killing continues. We have more tigers in the zoos than in the wild. The same with the cows. Government has convinced itself that we have the largest cattle population in the world with one crore cows. Do a head count—there will be less than 20 lakh left. Anybody in rural India can tell you that. Find me a cow in Punjab or Rajasthan or even Madhya Pradesh.
The cows in the gaushalas are not any better off. Most of the gaushala managers who have been gifted the land by the government to protect cows, now run them as dairies for their own milk. The Balkeshwar gaushala in Agra has a tie up with butchers who take the non-milking cows every month. In Mathura, the home of Krishna and the cows, you cannot find a single calf in any gaushala as they have all been sold because the milk of their mothers is for the gaushala managers. Hundreds of cows were sent by the Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister to Lakhimpur Kheri—supposedly to clear the streets of Lucknow. Most of them were sold by the truckers on the way to butcher shops. The few that arrived were immediately bought from the government gaushala by the meat traders, under the benign eye of the district magistrate. In Rajasthan, in Sirohi, the district magistrate gives false certificates every day to the cow traders and if the trucks are caught by activists, they are beaten by the police.
In Mumbai, the Muslims like eating only pregnant and milking cows. I have film footage of cows that are being milked ten minutes before their heads are cut off. Their udders are sold with the meat so that the buyer knows he is eating the flesh of a mother.
The Minister for Agriculture, Sharad Pawar, who owns piggeries and poultries himself and calls himself a “modern” farmer dismisses the entire killing as the disposal of useless animals. When people try to justify animal slaughter and meat export on the basis of earning money, it would be wise to look at the actual economic contribution of these so-called useless animals that you kill. A study by the Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering put out the following figures five years ago.
Our 73 million (this number is of 1990) draught animals work equivalent to 27 million megawatts of energy which means not only savings in terms of coal and other raw materials but also in terms of land for power projects and in pollution from noxious gases, effluents and fly ash.

Loss of cattle deprives us of dung for fuel and fertiliser which means loss of biogas and trees cut for firewood. In 1994, India for the first time had to import cow dung from Holland. While chemical fertiliser import has gone up from about 1 crore in 1960 to about Rs 450 crores in 1990 to triple that in 2005.
Look at our other imports of animal products: Import of milk and milk powder has risen from 6 tonnes in 1950 to 65 tonnes in 1990 while butter oil has gone from half a tonne to 16 and a half tonnes. Again triple that for 2006.
16 lakh litres of water are needed daily to keep ONE moderate sized slaughterhouse clean.

Kerala : Beef festival held in Guruvayur Devaswom college – Janma Bhumi Daily – April 9, 2015
Guruvayur-Thrissur (Kerala) : Beef fest was held in ShriKrishna college which is under the Guruvayur Devaswom Board. (It was held in the college which is under the Devaswom Board of Krushna, who was a Gorakshak.) (It was held by SFI and DYFI and thereby they challenged the faithful.
On March 27th, by around 11 am, beef was cooked in the college campus and served to all. Leaders from outside took initiative/leadership for the same. If protest was the sole aim of these organisers, they could have selected another venue for the same. But since they served beef this in the institution which comes under Guruvayur Devaswom board, it is clear that their aim was to denigrate Hindu society.
Even though ABVP activists met College Principal and protested against the program, no action has been taken. Even the Devaswom board is silent on this issue. The institution functions on the amount donated by the faithful and hence even though this incident occured, the Devaswom Board too is silent on the issue. The protest organised by SFI and DYFI against the ban on beef, is actually denigrating Hindu society.

Illegal slaughter houses funding insurgency: Maneka Gandhi – TOI-TNN – Apr 6, 2015
MANGALURU: Union minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi on Sunday said funds generated from cow slaughter in illegal slaughter houses were funding insurgency and terrorism.
“According to a police report in Uttar Pradesh, which has 11,000 illegal slaughter houses, the money is going towards insurgency, guns and terrorism,” she said, in response to a media query on cow slaughter.
The Union minister was in Kukke Subramanya on Sunday, 100km from here, to offer special puja to the deity.
The minister alleged that a mafia runs slaughter houses. “Take the case of Deonar slaughter house in Mumbai. They gave an undertaking in the high court that they would not export meat, which is for consumption in India. But 90% of the meat is exported. There have been hundreds of cases of stabbing and murder there. Anybody who tries to check what is actually being killed there is threatened,” she alleged. Deonar abattoir, located in the eastern suburb of Mumbai, is the largest in Asia.
She alleged that in India, 90% of the big slaughter houses are owned by foreigners who pay no taxes, water and power bills. “They flout every law, and are supposed to kill cattle above 16 years old. But for years they have been killing calves,” she alleged.
Cattle population figures are like tiger figures, quoted without a survey, she said. “At one point of time, the government put the tiger numbers at 25,000. A real survey put it at just 800. It is likewise for cattle too.”

India’s Maharashtra state bans beef – Sameer Hashmi – BBC – Mumbai – 3 March 2015
The Indian president has approved a bill which bans the slaughter of cows and the sale and consumption of beef in the western state of Maharashtra.
Anyone found breaking the law will face a fine and up to five years in prison.
Hindus, who comprise 80% of India’s 1.2bn population, revere cows and the sale and consumption of beef is banned or restricted in many states.
Correspondents say most beef sold in India is actually from water buffaloes which are not considered sacred at all.
But in Maharashtra, buffalo meat, generally seen to be of inferior quality, makes up only 25% of the market and the ban is likely to be felt more keenly there.
The state includes India’s commercial capital and biggest city Mumbai.
‘Pink revolution’
The Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill took 19 years to become law – it was first passed by the state’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena government in 1995 and was sent to the president for approval in January 1996.
The BJP, which returned to power in the state last year, once again pushed for it to be signed into law. Reports say a group of BJP MPs from the state met President Pranab Mukherjee last week to discuss the matter.
On Tuesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted his thanks to the president:
The BBC’s Shilpa Kannan in Delhi says the Maharashtra beef ban is the toughest so far in India – along with cows, it also forbids the killing of bulls and bullocks and even possessing beef, which will now be considered as contraband.
Unhappy beef traders in Maharashtra are checking if they can challenge the ban – they say the move will render tens of thousands jobless.
Although many Hindus consider cows sacred, large numbers of India’s population still eat beef and unproductive cattle are slaughtered for their meat and other products.
Following the Maharashtra ban, there is concern over what will happen to bulls and bullocks or to cows too old to produce milk or to give birth.
Critics of the bill say their owners, mostly farmers, could now be stuck feeding them for years until they die of natural causes.
Our correspondent says beef is more popular with the poor in India as it is typically cheaper than other meats such as chicken or mutton.
But because of religious sentiments and bans in various states, most of India’s beef is exported – with a 20% share of the global market and exports worth more than $4bn (£2.6bn) a year, it is now the country’s top agricultural export, beating the more famous basmati rice. Buffalo meat, however, accounts for 80% of the exports.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who led his BJP party to a landslide win in last year’s general election, has in the past complained about India’s “pink revolution” of rising meat exports, and expressed hope of bringing in a national ban on cow slaughter.

Friction over India’s beef trade heats up after attacks – Channel News Asia – Reuters – 25 Feb 2015
MUMBAI: Hindu nationalists in India have stepped up attacks on the country’s beef industry, seizing trucks with cattle bound for abattoirs and blockading meat processing plants in a bid to halt the trade in the world’s second-biggest exporter.
The industry is predominantly run by Muslim traders, but some groups in the majority Hindu population vehemently oppose it due to the revered status of cows and beef traders are concerned elements in the party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be condoning the latest flare-up in protests.
There has been a surge of raids this month. An official at a beef transport group in Maharashtra state said around 10 vehicles travelling to Mumbai had been stopped, the animals taken forcefully and drivers beaten by members of Hindu nationalist groups despite carrying valid documents.
“We are doing everything legally, but these people harass us and disrupt our work for no reason,” said Mohammad Shahid Sheikh, president of the beef transporters’ group in Deonar, the site of India’s biggest abattoir on the outskirts of Mumbai.
A majority of India’s beef comes from buffaloes, which are not worshipped, but members of Hindu nationalist groups involved in protests such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) consider themselves protectors of both cows and buffaloes.
Some of these groups have close links with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Prime Minister Modi, who himself criticised the previous government for promoting a “pink revolution to butcher cattle and export meat” when campaigning last April.
The BJP’s national general secretary, Ram Madhav, declined to comment on the party’s stance on the beef trade and the protests, while Modi’s press officer did not respond to calls and a text message seeking comment.
Satpal Malik, a vice president of the farmers wing of the BJP, said: “We did say we would discourage beef exports and even the prime minister was against it, but I can’t comment on what we think of the issue now.”
CRACKDOWN?
Officials in Maharashtra – scene of some of the most violent protests seen to date – have pledged to arrest anyone found impeding access to slaughterhouses or disrupting cattle movement.
A circular had been sent to all the police units to enforce this and was due to be implemented immediately, said a senior police officer from Maharashtra, declining to be named.
Mohammad Ali Qureshi, president of the Bombay Suburban Beef Dealers Association, said that while beef processing has resumed at many facilities, he would back calls for a nationwide protest if fresh protests break out.
“We will monitor the situation for a month and if the promises are not kept we will launch a nation-wide protest,” he said, in between sipping tea as butchers went about their job in Deonar.
But those opposed to the trade vowed to keep staging protests. Killing cows is legal in just two of India’s 29 states, though reports of illegal slaughter surface regularly.
“We don’t care if the butchers shut shop or announce a strike,” said Laxmi Narayan Chandak, head of the Maharashtra unit of VHP’s cow protection committee, which says it has been seizing cows held illegally for slaughter for years.
“The previous government supported the butchers to secure votes of the minority community but they have no support in the new government.”
India is the world’s top beef exporter after Brazil, cornering a fifth of the market. Its outbound shipments last year to October rose to 1.95 million tonnes, 5 percent more than for the whole of 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Maharashtra CM Fadnvais assures protection to beef traders – Zeeshan Shaikh – Indian Express – Mumbai – February 11, 2015
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnvais has assured protection to beef traders in Maharashtra who have been on strike for the past few days. The CM has said the rule of law will be followed and no one will be allowed to harass traders in the state.
Beef traders had been complaining against harassment being meted out to them alleged by right-wing groups. Beef has not been available in nearly 75 major towns and villages of Maharashtra, with traders going on a strike. Beef is also not available in Deonar, which is one of the largest markets supplying nearly 90,000 kg of beef to Mumbai every day.
Based on the CM’s assurance, several associations of beef traders and butchers will hold a meeting in Solapur on Saturday where they are likely to take a call on their future course of action and may also decide on calling off the strike.
“The CM met us for over 45 minutes. He assured us that he was bound to uphold law and order in the state and everyone who is doing a legal business would not be unnecessarily harassed,” said Mohammed Qureshi, president of the Mumbai Suburban Beef Dealer Association who was part of the delegation that met the CM.
A senior government official present during the meeting said the CM had given orders to all police officials in the state to ensure law and order was maintained and no one was unnecessarily harassed.
“The CM told us that no one apart from the police can stop vehicles carrying animals,” Qureshi added. Beef traders have been complaining that vehicles ferrying animals were stopped and illegally confiscated allegedly by right-wing activists.
While slaughter of cows is prohibited in the state under the Maharsashtra Animal Preservation Act of 1976, that of bulls, bullocks and buffaloes is allowed subject to a fit-for-slaughter certificate. The traders have claimed that they are hounded despite possessing these certificates.
Beef is generally seen as the poor man’s meat and costs nearly a third of mutton. Mumbai has 900 licenced stalls that sell beef and an equal number of illegal stalls. The culling and processing of the animals, however, take place only in Deonar where on an average nearly 450 big animals are slaughtered every day.
Right-wing groups and Jain organisations have been asking for shutdown of the Deonar abattoir, which is one of the largest in the country.

The cow is the great nourisher. While we get food from plants, the milk form the cows yields curd, butter and ghee that gives us the fat to nourish our bodies. Vasishta gave Viswamitra everything but refused to give up his cow Kamadhenu. How tragic that we should butcher the cow and send it elsewhere.
I request the honorable prime minister Narendra Modi to declare January 1 as “Go divas” and celebrate the day as a festival for the cows. On this day let Hindus worship the cow and pledge not to pawn its body for money. If we cannot take care of a nourisher like the cow, we cannot take care of our country

Nothing will happen to elephant tomorrow.Because the rate at which elephants are getting killed (only two days before three elephants were trainocuted ) there is little possibility that will survive more than a few years.

A Tortured Elephant
Sundar, a young elephant at the Jyotiba temple in Maharashtra is kept under horrible conditions. He is confined to chains with sharp spikes and kept alone inside a dark shed, where he can barely move. Sunder is denied all that is natural and important to him and lives in fear.
I love animals and so I started a petition asking Forest Minister Dr Patangrao Shripatrao Kadam to immediately free Sundar and send him to an elephant sanctuary.
Immediate Action Required
Sundar has sustained serious injuries around his eyes because of prodding. Keeping Sundar in these conditions might lead to severe psychological distress, cause leg injuries, foot ailments and arthritis.
Growing Public Pressure
Many international figures have already voiced their concern and written to the Forest Minister to free Sundar. You can also join the call by signing my petition and asking for an immediate release for Sundar before he suffers more.
The officials concerned are trying to downplay the situation and there is still no clarity if the elephant was procured legally or not. With no caretaker the situation might worsen.
If thousands sign this petition the Minister will not be able to ignore the demand to immediately release Sundar and send him to a sanctuary where he could be given proper care and attention.

Today’s Hindu newspaper carries 2 news reports about emu farms. In one of them is the pregnant observation that people have sold their land and cattle to invest in emu farms – you give up agriculture as dharma, send your animals for slaughter and from that money invest in the slaughter of other animals.
The meat industry will not only decimate our cow and cattle population it has killed the soul of the people.
The emu is a tall bird which can live up to 30 or 40 years. It is bred here unnaturally because it is not native to this soil. If god thinks something belongs somewhere else, there must be a reason for it. To bring it here and then breed it in captivity for slaughter is the worst form of abuse of life.
According to mercenaries and meat eaters, the emu’s meat hardens after four or five years. So when this bird is raised for meat it has to be slaughtered before it comes to four years of age.
Think about this – a being which can live up to 30 or 40 years is slaughtered when it is four just because meat eaters are no longer eating meat because it a part of their life but as a fad.
Meat eaters like sexual offenders if not checked, want more and more excitement for their offence, more and more fancies to feed their fetish. It was ostrich at one time, it is emu today. What will it be tomorrow? Elephant?
This is not a meat eating or meat producing civilization. Meat eating was rare and for special occasions and confined only to a small section of our people. Today it is an industry, a fad. And that kills the soul of the nation.

We can judge a culture and a people for how it treats animals.
That is one more of the tremendous ills of secular India.
In a Hindu India this could not have happened.
The totality of Muslim population should have been expelled from Bharat during partition.
Cows would be happier and enforcement against slaughter houses could be a reality. Abattoirs closed and people who infringe the law imprisoned or sent to Pakistan to eat their meat.
The ills of secular multiculturalism are legion! Since in such conditions, the governments cannot have any cosmo-vision except profit and votes.
At the same time Hindus are to be fully blamed as to allow such cruelties in their land.

Manyaji, I fail to understand what you are trying to convey. I have no idea about the past life of Smt. Maneka Gandhi nor do I have any interest to know. What does it matter what Smt. Maneka Gandhi was? The fact that she is diligently spear heading a movement to protect Gomata is reason enough to prostrate before her. Everybody raises their eye brows in fear and contempt when the character of Raavan comes before them. But the Shiva Tandav Strotam written by him evokes the feeling of devotion in people. No body shuns the hymn just because Ravan is the author of this hymn. The killing of cows is a very momentous issue before the Hindus and they should be grateful to Smt. Maneka Gandhi. The Gita says about this in (9/ 30).

First, Adolf Hitler was not a vegetarian. He was very fond of Bavarian sausages. The story that he was vegetarian was put out by the Catholic Church in order to associate vegetarians with Nazis and therefore criminalise them. That you believe the vegetarian Hitler story and quote it to me, shows that you also can be misled by politically motivated fables.
I do not know the details of Maneka Gandhi’s political career. I do know her husband, Sanjay, was involved in forced vasectomies and slum clearance in Delhi and had a lot of supporters too. He also advised his mother, Indira, to set up a dictatorship which she attempted with the Emergency.
Is Maneka Gandhi responsible for her husband’s activities? I do not know. I only know her as an informed animal rights activist.
Her article is published here because it has the hard data for this extraordinary crime against the cow which the Indian government and administration, and many Hindus too, are engaged in. Everybody has an opinion but very few have the facts. We are interested in the facts and Maneka Gandhi has the facts.

While every proud Hindu is against cow slaughter, I strongly object Maneka Gandhi’s write-up appearing on this blog. She is one of those inhuman, demonic people who spear-headed the slum-burning/mass forced vasectomy movement and “garibon ko hatao” pogroms during the emergency. This murderer, who is an insult to the nation has not rights to comment on the rights, freedom and piousness of Gomaata or any other living being as such. This is akin to a situation in which the blog is publishing an article by Adolf Hitler on vegetarianism, forgetting all his crimes towards humanity, just because he was a vegetarian.

Cow slaughter goes entirely against the Hindu ethos. When I read articles like this, I think we have completely lost our moral sense and ability to discriminate (Aurobindo: Indians have lost the ability to think). That our government is PROUD of the beef export trade shows how low we can bend for the dollar and yuan. It is not just the Muslim leather industry, there is Hindu big money behind the flesh trade to China, Russia and the UAE too. At home it is said Mumbai’s main abattoir is owned by a Jain and Hyderabad’s by a pious Hindu (unverified). Some attempt to blame the British for this sad circumstance has been made as they promoted the beef and leather trade. But 64 years of self-government makes us solely responsible for our amoral conduct and sorry condition, not the British.
It is not just the cow slaughter business that is disturbing. The cruelty of animal transport in India is mind boggling. It would never be permitted by the beef-eaters in the US or EU where strict laws regarding movement of animals by road or train are enforced. I have seen French police stop trucks going into Spain and make the attendants feed and water the cattle before proceeding (that was in the 1960s; the rules are much stricter today). Today I see trucks sneak through the back roads of my town with cows with broken legs dangling off the back of the vehicle as they head for Pondicherry and Chennai.
